What's in a name? Er...well, everything, really! Of course your little bundle of joy is the sweetest, most beautiful thing you have ever seen and you want to choose a name that reflects his/her individuality, spirituality, uniqueness and all-round special-ness.

But wait a minute!

Remember that the unique baby name you choose will help define junior's life - how they are viewed and accepted - for many, many years. What sounds cute and original for a 5-year-old, may not sound so funky for a 15-year-old...and what about a 55-year old?

Time was when only celebrities could get away with unique baby names (Zowie Bowie, Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa, etc), but in the modern world, individuality is more prized than ever before, and increasingly, this starts with our names. Great idea - but don't allow a flash of a self-indulgence to condemn your child to a lifetime of problems; it's reported that a Chinese couple named their child "Saddam Sars" to mark the current world events at the time of the birth! I just hope it means something nice in Mandarin, or Cantonese!

This probably wouldn't have happened in Germany, where names can only be registered if they recognizable, do not ridicule the child and are gender specific. Perhaps there is at least one Chinese child in the world, who will grow up wishing he/she were German!

So - assuming you are not German - what should you do if you want to create a unique baby name, without creating too many problems? Here are some tips and some warnings to make the process less painful:

1. Anagrams: try creating an anagram of an existing name.

2. Father and Mother: try using derivatives of one of the parents' names, or a combination of both. Alternatively, how does the mother's maiden name sound as a first name?

3. Telescoping: try dropping letters from another name or a word, until you get a nice-sounding unique baby name.

4. Spelling: an unusual spelling of a common name creates uniqueness. However, remember that your child will be condemned to a lifetime of "...that's David spelt D..A..Y..V..I..D..." conversations.

5. Pronunciation: another trick is to pronounce a common name in an unusual way. But this can also lead to a lifetime of corrections and explanations - as well as teasing and accusations of pretentiousness.

6. History: do some research into names that were popular in previous eras, but have become less so.

7. Family History: are there any unusual baby names that can be used to honor family members or ancestors? But beware family politics...

8. Nature: many names come from the natural world, particularly flowers (e.g. Rose) and it's a great source for unique baby names (e.g. Gwyneth Paltrow's daughter Apple).

9. Geography: another useful source of great names - grab an atlas and start searching. David and Victoria Beckham called their first son Brooklyn, which many people think is a cool-sounding name. However, it's reported that the choice was made because that's where conception took place. Hmmm, imagine a lifetime in which your name is a constant reminder of your parents having sex! Eeeuuuuww!!!

10. Celebrities: famous people with slightly unusual names are a common source of inspiration. There are lots of teenage "Kylie"s running around the UK since Kylie Minogue's arrival on the music scene at end of the '80's, and her recent resurgence, will have created a second wave of them. And I'm sure many little "Be'yonce"s have been popping up over the last few years. The only problem is that names like these very soon begin to sound a little silly and "wannabe".

11. Foreign Names: consider using a foreign version of a name, e.g., Pedro, instead of Peter. Or try using a name from a completely different culture.

12. Nicknames: try using a nickname e.g. Angie, instead of Angela or Angelina. However, make sure the name is will pass the "age test" - see number 17 below.

13. Middle Names: a great way to accommodate individuality when naming your baby, is to combine a common first name with a unique second/middle name. The benefit of this is that your child can avoid embarrassment throughout his/her life by ignoring it of keeping it hidden.

14. Initials: when you have settled on some baby names, check that the initials aren't embarrassing. This is an easy trap to fall into and can lead to a lifetime of misery. "Zina Indigo" are may be nice sounding names for your lovely daughter, but make sure your surname doesn't begin with "T"!

15. First Name-Surname: check how the selected first name combines with the surname. Make sure the two names do not create some something recognizable, to prevent a lifetime of teasing. Also, check the rhythm of the two names; a different number of syllables in each name usually flows much better. Avoid rhyming the 2 names at all costs or your child will hate you forever!

16. The loudness test: try saying the name softly, at normal pitch and shouting it very loudly. You may be surprised at the results.

17. The age test: try to visualize your child with the name as a baby, as a teenager, as a young adult, a mature adult and as a senior citizen. A name can create completely different perceptions of the individual at separate stages of life.

18. The meaning: the final test of the baby name that you choose should be to check its meaning (if any). Don't leave your child open to getting a nasty surprise later in life.

Whatever unique baby name you decide, don't fall into the trap of self-indulgence. Remember, it's not about you, it's all about your child. Your grand design to celebrate the uniqueness of this new human being, may eventually lead to a lifelong, desperate desire for conformity and anonymity. Even Zowie Bowie eventually changed his name to "Joey"...

For some expectant parents, naming their baby is easy and straightforward. Some parents have had a name in mind for many years. Some may have already decided the baby is going to be named after members of the family. For some it's simply the case that they know of a name they like and would love to give to their child.

For other parents, finding a name is rather more complex. With the Internet being a great source of information on just about anything under the sun, there are many places where one can look at lists of information on names - popularity, origin and meaning, even names of celebrities if a parent feels inspired to name their newborn after someone they admire.

But how to choose? With the existence and popularity of the Internet, as well as society becoming more multi-cultural, the variety of possible names is so large that it can be overwhelming.

And, another question that is often asked is how many names to go for?

This matter is easier to solve than the first. When children grow up, they tend to love having more than one name. I recommend that unless there is good reason to just have the one name, I'd consider giving your child at least one more. After all, it's a special gift they can cherish for the many years to come.

I would recommend two to four names. Again, unless there is a good reason for more, I think four is a reasonable "limit". Any more than that and it gets difficult for a growing child to remember their full name.

Choosing the name, or names, can be a bit complex, but there are some pieces of advice I can give you.

- If there are a few names you are considering, see how well those names work with the child's surname. Some names work together, some don't. By trying out the various combinations, you will soon see what works.

- Although there is a trend for unusual first names, especially amongst celebrities, I would not recommend going for any name that just looks like someone stuck some random syllables together. This probably goes without saying, but the trend did come from somewhere and the children given those names will have to live with them. What may sound cute now may go out of fashion. It's better to choose a beautiful name with a true meaning.

- The same goes for naming children after current celebrities. In some cases this works, in some cases it doesn't, so I wouldn't recommend this option without due consideration.

- There are some names that have lasted through the ages, and that have still not lost their popularity. Names like Michael and David, Hannah and Sarah, are often considered strong names that work well. It's easy to look up popular names online.

- Some people hear a name and envision a personality they associate with that name. It can be fun and helpful to do this. What do you think of when you hear the name Sarah? This is just an example, but it can offer practical help.

- If you have a special bond with a member of your family, or a friend, you could consider their names for your child. Usually this goes for a second or third name. It's an honour to have a baby named after you. And a name chosen in this manner will often endear the child to those members of your family and friends even more.

- If you would like an unusual name for your baby, but you aren't too sure if it will work for a first name, you could always add it as a second or third name as well, or even a fourth. This way your child has the choice of using it when they grow up, when one decides what they like to be addressed as.

1.) Cute doesn't last forever.

Cute baby names aren't so cute once they aren't babies. As a matter of fact, according the Social Security Administration of the US, the name "Baby" has been one of the top 1000 baby names for the past fourteen years.

So, what wrong with cute names like "Baby" or "Chance"? The thing people tend to overlook is that at some point these children grow up. You are less likely to be taken seriously on a professional level if your name sounds like a nickname one would use for an infant or pet poodle. I imagine many of the girls named "Baby" find themselves before a judge to have it changed as soon as they are legally able to.

2.) Pun names aren't funny.

3.) Just because some stars do it, doesn't mean you should.

After a certain point misspelled names stop looking artistic and start looking outlandish. Creating a confusing name for your child isn't doing them any favors.

Remember when in doubt ask yourself: Would I be embarrassed if I were named this? Would kids have teased me for this name back when I was in school? Would he/she be taken seriously in a professional setting with this name? Does it flow well with his/her last name? Hopefully nobody, as this name unfortunately totals a number that indicates relationship problems, misfortune and bad luck. And that's not according to some new 'name meanings' list, but an Ancient Scientific Name Analysis System that has been used since ancient Egyptian times when it was used solely for the naming of the Royal Children, to ensure they had the best possible traits for their life.

These days, very few people are choosing their baby names with a scientific strategy! Many will choose a name based on a name they like the sound of (which may turn out to be a good thing if you have good intuition), or after a favourite relative, or after a relative who would be upset if their name wasn't used! Or perhaps the baby name will be influenced by the latest 'popular' baby names, or you will name your baby after a singer, actor or other celebrity that you like.

So, all-in-all it's a bit of a lottery as to what name your baby ends up with. Maybe you have heard that a particular name apparently means 'child of joy' or some other such phrase. That is all well and good, but it doesn't tell you anything about the personality traits of that name, or the health issues connected with the name, or whether the letters in the name are positive for your child or negative. (Every letter of a name also has a meaning). It also doesn't tell you whether the name is a good match with the surname you have, and this is vital. Here is an example of what I mean. You may know someone yourself who can be extrovert one minute and moody and withdrawn the next. This can obviously create relationship problems. Will their future partner fall in love with the extrovert side or the introvert side? And what happens when the other side comes out?

Let's look at the letters in a name briefly. Some letters like C and G for instance are positive, while the letter H brings 8 years of stress and strain at various times throughout the life, and this can be pinpointed via the date of birth. U brings losses. F brings a tendency for concealment.

What you ideally need is a name for your baby that complements the surname, totals a number that brings good personality traits and has predominantly positive letters. (I can advise on all these).

To give you some food for thought about how a name can affect someone's life, here are the names of some famous, successful people who have a different name today to the one they were born with. Cilla Black, John Wayne, Bono, Elton John, Englebert Humperdink. The latter is a particularly interesting one. Englebert's former name was Jerry Dorsey, yet he had no success as a singer with that name in spite of the fact that he toured all the pubs and clubs for 16 years. It was only after he changed his name that he went on to have number one hit records, international success and wealth, and he is still releasing records today all these decades later (so his unusual new name didn't simply create a one-hit wonder). The key to his new name is the fact that, according to the system I use, it totals a number that brings success in Entertainment! (I think that was just down to luck or good intuition in this case, I'm not aware of him having had Name Analysis!) Would the other celebrities have had the same success with their former names? We will never know, but I can't imagine Elton being an International Star as a Reg Dwight!

Meaning Behind the Name

There are a hundred different ways that people find a name they like to use for their child. They could have read it in a book, heard it on a show or movie, or even know someone with a name they like. But how many of these people actually stop and think about the meaning to the name, or even know the meaning to the name? Is it important? Should people be named more on how something sounds or what the meaning is?

Does the meaning even matter? A child could be given a name that doesn't fit them at all. A name could be given to a child because of the meaning, and then the meaning doesn't match up with how the child turns out.

Take for example the male's name Lang. It is of Scandinavian origin and means "tall man." It is a very nice name, but it can't be assured that the meaning is going to fit the child when he grows up. Lang could very well turn out to be a short man when he reaches adulthood. There is nothing wrong with that, but the fact remains that the meaning of the name does not fit his character.

A second example is the name Kenneth. It is of Celtic origin and means "handsome." Not every guy in the world is going to be considered handsome. This doesn't mean that if someone isn't handsome then they are ugly, though. It just means that looks are subjective.

If we can't determine how our children turn out, then why are Lang and Kenneth chosen as names? Surely their parents realize that just because you name a child something doesn't mean he/she is going to end up fitting the meaning. This must mean that meaning has become less and less important in this day and age, and that how a name looks and sounds is the key to choosing a name.

Another example is Jacob, which is of Hebrew origin and means "supplanter." It is a very common name in the world, but chosen for its meaning? Doubtful. Supplanter means "one who replaces something else." It is unlikely that people really imply this when they name their child this. The meaning is quite vague.

There is the opposite aspect of this, though. Names that have wonderful and loving meanings but are often overlooked because they aren't as common nowadays. The first example of this is the female name Adora. It is of Latin origin and means "beloved one." That is a very beautiful meaning to give to a child, but it is becoming less and less favored as more dominant names, like Sarah which means "princess" seem to appeal to parents more often now.

Then there are the names that are made up, that have no real meaning besides what the creator might have them imply. Is there anything wrong with these names at all? Not at all. In fact, one may argue that there is much more meaning to them than any of the already used names. Why? Because they are created specifically for the child, there is already an expressed love between the parents and the child. They're honoring their child with something unique and meaningful to them, not meaningful to the world.

So does meaning matter? To those want it to, yes. To those that don't, no. There is nothing wrong with that. The important thing is to give a child a name that you feel fits them, and a name that is given to them because you love them and not because you are obsessed with a certain word, or name, or anything like that. The name will be part of their life so it's important to choose wisely.

Understanding Traditional Southern Baby Names

Any true southerner has trouble understanding why Yankees get such a laugh out of some Southern baby names. People not in the loop think double or even triple names are slapped together for no other reason than locally pleasing meter or syntax. It may be unreasonable of me, but the idea of anybody poking fun at a tradition they don't understand just makes me mad. Southerners choose their babies' names for excellent reasons. Never mind that the names that they select are most likely different than those on the list of most popular baby names for any given year!

Southern moms don't just flip through the latest books and pick names because they are cute or trendy. These ladies go through more pains in naming their kids than they did in giving birth to them! That statement may be taking it a bit too far, but folks in the south do literally agonize over what to name their baby. This is because choosing southern baby names involves much more than reading the few words in some generic baby book that lists the copycat definitions of various baby names.

Definitions are all fine and good, they have worked for the people who publish Webster's Dictionary for years! But when you start talking about naming southern boys and girls you're looking at meanings of names within families, not what they might mean to a person who speaks Latin or Hebrew!

As far as meter goes, I don't care how lightly a certain name trips off the tongue, diligence and research has to be exercised in the naming process. Care must be taken so as not to risk naming a child after a second cousin somewhere in the lineage that committed some type of faux pas back in the day. The unlucky ancestor's unfortunate misdeed could have been anything from having fought for the north to having done time in Atlanta for not having been discrete about the location of the family still. The crime would be in having been caught, as there is certainly no dishonor in making your own refreshments even in the New South.

Don't be mistaken to think that only the names of a southern child's parents or even grandparents are passed forward. There may have been a brave great great uncle who fought bravely in the war and deemed worthy of remembrance. In this instance there may be a competition every generation or so among siblings to have the first boy child. The prize for winning this rather unusual race will be that the first born son can have first dibs for the famous great grand uncle's name! Sometimes the rules of first come first serve are violated and the results are that there will be a covey of first cousins all bearing their famous ancestor's name! Talk about chaos at the family reunion! How in the world can you differentiate between all those little Beauregard namesakes? How does a body manage a shout out to one of them without bringing in the entire clan? That's where middle names come in handy and brings me to a possible theory on the southern tradition of double names!

As we all know southerners are famous for double names. Some are forced to resort to triple names so that their little Mary or Michael stands apart from the rest. Why this is a tradition credited to the south I'm not really sure. I would like to think that southerners have so many famous kin that they want to claim. This fact makes it necessary to give each child several names so that each illustrious departed family member is sufficiently honored.

I can't count the many theories where credit can be given for the reasoning of traditional southern baby naming patterns and the traditions behind them. There seems to be no definitive answer on why family names and history appear to be more important to new parents below the Mason Dixon Line than in other parts of the nation. There is however, no argument that the results are some of the most elegant and romantic names you will find printed on a birth certificate anywhere. The next time you feel tempted to giggle at a child named Billy Bob consider that the first person that bore the same name may not have perished defending a southern belle's honor but that he may have died defending our freedom and our country.

It is not uncommon for a Chinese couple to seek the services of an astrologer to find a suitable Chinese baby name for their new born child. It is believe that a suitable Chinese baby name can improve the luck of the child and give the child a more auspicious life path.

In Victorian England, beginning around the middle of the 19th century, little girls were routinely named after flowers. The flowery nature of that era – which gave rise to countless Violets, Hyacinths, and even little Buttercups – extended into the early 20th century, after which time, both in England and the United States, floral baby names faded from sight almost completely.

In the England of the Industrial Revolution, perhaps as a way of maintaining a connection with a fast-disappearing natural landscape, house plants were introduced into homes, and floral names were bestowed on girls. Names such as Blossom, Dahlia, Marigold, Primrose, Posy, Poppy, and even Daffodil, are all recorded in the authoritative Dictionary of First Names, by Hanks and Hodges, as having been popular girls' names in Victorian England. Their popularity extended beyond the turn of the century, and a few, such as Poppy, stayed in vogue even until the 1920s. After that time, the use of floral names tapered off considerably. The most notable exception is the name Heather, which was not really a Victorian favorite, but surprisingly, was extremely popular in the United States in the 1970s through the 1980s.

Today, while floral baby names are still unusual, they retain a special niche, and in some cases are enjoying a resurgence. In the past year alone, at least five celebrities have used the name Rose for their daughters. The number ten name, Marguerite, is ranked number ten based on its most recent census ranking, because like many floral baby names, it does not appear on the Social Security Administration's top 1000 list, and thus its exact ranking is not known.

The list is a purely floral list, meaning the names that appear are either the names of flowers, or have a close association with a floral term. Can Your Name Shape Your Destiny?

People have always believed in the power of your name to shape your destiny. But can it really? And can knowledge of the hidden power of a name help parents pick a 'better' name for their baby?

Several philosophies embody strong beliefs about the significance, and power, behind your name. There is the 'psychological' camp, the 'mystical' camp, the 'religious/spiritual' camp, and the 'sound' camp. All four overlap, but there are real differences.

The psychological approach maintains that your name influences how people perceive you, and this affects how they treat you. In turn, this affects your self-image and self-esteem, from early childhood onward. In its simplest form, a child with an 'unusual' name, such as Archibald, may be continuously teased in school, and this will hurt Archibald's self-image and development. By contrast, an 'Andrew' or a 'Christopher,' both very popular names, are empowering, because other people unconsciously respond to them with a certain level of respect.

Psychological research shows that boys with unusual first names tend to display more emotional disturbances than boys with more traditional names. But, as researchers point out, it is important not to overstate this phenomenon. Are the boys in question more troubled because of their names, or because of the parents, and family background, which gave them strange names in the first place? But certainly, there are many instances where 'desirable' names are shown to lead to greater success.

In the mystical realm, there are several ancient belief systems which hold that your name has innate power and meaning, and that by knowing this meaning, you can harness the power in your life.

Numerology is the systematic study of numbers and their interrelationships. Since ancient times, many cultures have developed complex symbolic number systems. Numerologists assign meanings and significance to each number. Through numerology, according to its adherents, you can gain a deep understanding of the symbolic meaning of your name, and harness this understanding in your daily life.

The Kabbalah, the ancient mystical philosophy of the Jewish religion, is based on the Tree of Life and the interrelationship among all things. These interrelationships include numerical values from the Tree of Life, and can be combined with the mystical meanings of letters in the alphabet. A Kabbalistic analysis of a person's name provides deep insights into their personality and character. Your name, according to this philosophy, is a key to understanding yourself.

The ancient European system of 'runes' also assigns special meanings to each symbol. Using the runic 'alphabet,' also known as the 'Futhark,' you can convert your name into a group of runic symbols, which in turn, paint a full picture of your personality and attributes.

Turning to more traditional faith-based beliefs, many religions and cultures place enormous importance on given names, and, often, on the naming ceremony. Ashkenazic Jews believe that the name represents a person's soul, and hence can influence an entire life. Because of this, Ashkenazic Jews refuse to name a baby after a living relative, for fear that the two souls would have to share a name, thereby shortening the life of the older relative.

In the Book of Proverbs, 22:1, it says that 'a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.' What does this mean? Many biblical names have both literal and spiritual meanings, and for many parents, a biblical baby name is believed to bestow spiritual gifts on a baby. The biblical name Ariel literally means 'Lion of God' in Hebrew, and its spiritual meaning is 'Powerful Leader.' Religious parents who name a child this way are hoping the child will grow up to be a strong leader in society.

One fascinating school of thought holds that the very sound of a name, repeated endlessly through the centuries, helps determine what that name 'means.' In his book 'The Secret Universe of Names,' Roy Feinson argues that the sound of a name itself evokes a particular emotional response in those who hear it. Furthermore, Feinson claims, the act of speaking contorts the facial muscles in certain ways, in turn affecting the emotional response of the listener. Feinson tracks various paramaters showing how certain names, and name sounds, can affect our lives in many ways.

Finally, there is the 'harmonic vibration' school, espoused by Pierre Le Rouzic in his book 'The Secret Meaning of Names'. Le Rouzic argues that names contain hidden vibrations, which are an embedded aspect of a person's character. The vibrations begin before birth, as the child within the mother's womb 'speaks' to the mother. For this reason, Le Rouzic says, it is mothers who best understand the nature of the child they are bearing, and it is mothers who should take the lead in naming the child. The vibrations of a name are also connected to specific colors, animals, plants, and so forth. All come together to form 'character' types that can accurately describe a child's future personality and character.

Can you be sure that your baby's name will affect his or her entire life? Probably not. But prospective parents may want to give some credence to the various schools of thought about the significance of names. All of these belief systems are based on ancient, time-tested philosophies. Even if you don't subscribe fully to any one system, there is much to learn, and think about, in all of them. For parents who make up new names in order to be different - they may want to think twice about what they are doing. If your name is truly part of your destiny, then naming your baby is a serious responsibility.

It's important that you exercise during pregnancy. Not only will it help to keep you in good shape, but it could also ease your delivery. Perhaps the best exercise a pregnant woman can do is simple walking. You can do it anytime, anywhere, and it will keep you in fine form. Sore nipples are a condition that is the cause behind discomfort and stress for most women and especially more so for the mother who has a baby that enjoys a tipple from mummy's nipple. Babies love their mums to nestle - and not wrestle with them at feeding times. In the early days of breastfeeding sore nipples is sometimes unavoidable. What you need to remember at this stage is the difference between the meaning of sore and painful. Pain at feed times could be a sign that you need to make changes so that feeding sessions is more comfortable for both you and your new born baby.

Babies have an unbelievable strong suction - which therefore can result in the nipple area becoming tender. When baby comes in contact with the nipple it stretches the breast tissue. When the infant sucks and the milk begins to flow, breastfeeding becomes more bearable i.e. easing the sore nipples. You may notice after time (2-4 days) breast soreness will ease. What you do not want is the baby's gums chomping at the base of the nipple instead of on the areola over the milk sinuses because they may have difficulty in getting enough milk. Try feeding baby on the side that is least tender. If you need to release the breast that is painful then switch the infant over to that nipple after you have had a milk-ejection reflex. Women say the pain eases after the milk is flowing. Sore nipples do not last forever. Remember by varying the positions from one feeding to the next - changes the distribution of pressure on the areola and nipple during sucking - therefore leaving you bonding with a well fed content baby.

One of the great challenges of new motherhood is how to feed your baby. At the beginning of your child's life, you must decide whether to breastfeed, bottle-feed, or use a combination of the two methods. However, once your newborn baby matures and its time to stop breast feeding, you face another challenge: How can you introduce new foods into your little one's diet? As you might expect, there are a number of factors that go into such an undertaking.

Timing

Timing is critical in just about everything, but particularly when it comes to introducing solids into your baby's diet. Theoretically, you can begin solid feedings any time between four and six months-although some pediatricians recommend that you wait even longer. A baby's digestive system simply cannot digest solids until he or she approaches the half-birthday mark. If you wait until your baby is ready, you will lessen the risk of an allergic reaction. You'll also shorten the transition period between spoon- and self-feeding.

There are certain things you should look for when determining whether your baby is ready for solids. For instance, he or she will need good head control. In addition, your baby must sit up well and must not use the tongue to push food out of the mouth. Your baby must be making chewing motions and demonstrate a growing appetite.

A Test Run

Consider doing a test run with your baby. For instance, start with a little bit of dry rice cereal mixed with formula or breast milk. The portion should be small enough to fit on the tip of a spoon. Begin with a once-a-day feeding, and then build onto that. Before you add any other solid foods, your baby should be able to consume about a half-cup of cereal each day.

When is Baby Full?

There are certain tricks you can use to determine when baby is full. For instance, if your baby leans back in his or her wooden baby high chair, turns his or her head away from the food, and begins playing with the spoon, he or she may not want anything more to eat. The most important factor here is that you be patient and observe your baby's actions. You will know when the time is right to introduce new foods.
